We maintain Trial gardens on Cortes Island, B.C., a small island off the east side of Vancouver Island. The gardens are located at the south end of the island and are in an unusual microclimate; garden zone 9 at the 50th parallel. It is not uncommon for us to still have cut flowers for the table in the first weeks of November. The land is a balance of cultivated gardens and natural forested areas and wildlife is abundant.

We engage in ecological design and follow organic gardening guidelines. We practice a combination of biodynamic, organic, biointensive and permaculture farming methods such as composting, building soil, crop rotation, companion planting, water management and natural pest control.

Although we enjoy a fairly mild climate year round, we still need extra protection to extend our season and achieve abundant harvests. The Sunpod greenhouses and mini greenhouses were designed for use in our own gardens and we quickly saw how effective, energy efficient and easy to use they are.

We welcome you to walk down our garden paths and see what has happened in our SunPod garden this year and in past years.

How to grow container Organic Culinary herbs

Growing organic culinary herbs in containers is easy with a few basic guidelines. In the spring and summer months it is often effortless to grow excellent herbs for the table because they are undemanding and usually need little to accomplish great size and taste. Many culinary herbs are also fairly cold tolerant and will continue to produce usable leaves into the Fall. Most cold tolerant herbs will go dormant for the winter and come back the following spring. What if you want culinary herbs for your table all year round? It is possible to continue to harvest excellent quality leaves any time of the year if you protect your plants and provide them with more bottom heat and full spectrum lights. The following essay documents how easy it is to put together your own organic culinary herb container for your family.

Early Spring Lettuce

We chose "Merlot " lettuce for its touted red leaves that are higher in antioxidants than green lettuce leaves. We planted in a new urban garden setting in soil that left much to be desired as it is mostly sand.
